Disappointment vs Wholehearted Living
Disappointment is a hard emotion for me to deal with. Whether it’s disappointing myself or disappointing someone else, fear of disappointment often keeps me from living wholeheartedly.
I’ll give you an example. When I was in college, I was driven to earn A’s, worried about being a “successful” student as well as holding down a job. I got half way through and I realized that I hadn’t really been enjoying the experience. So, from that point on I decided to enjoy college, take in the sights around me, get to know my fellow students a bit better, and enjoy my studies in a way as to not miss out on day to day life.
Wholehearted living is courageous living.
I recently listened to a TED talk by Brené Brown, who is a researcher that looks at emotions, life, and how people deal with life events. You can check out her talk here! This is my understanding of the concepts she shared and how I see it relating to life.
She said that the original definition of courage from the Latin word was, “telling the story of who you are with your whole heart.” To do that you have to have the courage to be imperfect.
If you don’t live courageously, vulnerably and wholeheartedly, you can miss out on so much. Those qualities are necessary for growth.
If you decide to shield yourself from experiencing emotions like shame, disappointment, and guilt you will also find that you are shielding yourself from experiencing positive emotions as well.
God created us to experience all emotions.
He also gave us the ability to make choices.
Because we are human and God gave us the ability to choose, we sometimes make the wrong choices and then experience those “negative”, more uncomfortable emotions.
Disappointment, mistakes, successes, living vulnerably and living wholeheartedly are all opportunities to grow, love ourselves, and appreciate where we are in our personal growth.
